A Moderate Approach to Children's Orthodontics
Prudent intervention in childhood guides oral development, preventing more serious problems later. When immediate orthodontic treatment is not necessary, your orthodontist will carefully monitor your child's ongoing oral development and begin treatment at the ideal time.
At Munk Orthodontics, our approach to early orthodontics is based primarily on monitoring growth and development. We'll only intervene when strictly necessary, usually in cases where the child has a narrow upper jaw, a crossbite, or when adult teeth are being blocked from growing into position properly.
Orthodontic treatment in childhood can help address many of the common oral problems that children face as they grow up – including speech and eating issues, snoring, teeth grinding, thumb sucking, and more. The information we gather during monitoring can help guide and inform future orthodontic treatment.
At our orthodontic clinics in Clarkston, Oxford and Davison, we offer jaw growth guidance with palatal expanders and traditional braces for our young patients.
Consultations & Monitoring for Children
Children should visit the orthodontist around age seven for their first orthodontic consultation. At this age, treatment may not be necessary, but a comprehensive examination can help us determine the most advantageous time to begin treatment.
If treatment is required, we'll commence with a treatment plan. If not, we recommend assessment appointments every six to 12 months until your child is ready for comprehensive orthodontic care.
